In 2017 we extended our reach along the Atlantic Margin by securing acreage in Mexico. Since then we have actively expanded our position in-country, and now have working interests in four offshore blocks (two Cairn operated). Through 2019 & 2020 we plan to drill six exploration wells (two Cairn operated), targeting >700mmboe prospective resources.
Cairn holds four licences offshore Mexico, in Block 7 (Cairn 35% WI*), Block 9 (Cairn operator 50% WI*), Block 10 (Cairn 15% WI), and Block 15 (Cairn operator 50% WI) covering a total acreage position of 2,615 km2 in a highly prolific, yet under-explored region. In 2018 we opened an office in Mexico City.
Cairn’s Mexico drilling programme will get underway during Q3 2019 with two operated wells on Block 9 and two non-operated wells on Blocks 7 and 10. The operated campaign with the Maersk Developer semi-submersible drilling rig will begin with the Alom-1 well targeting stacked Pleistocene objectives in the south of the block. This well will be followed by the multiple target Bitol-1 well, a deeper test evaluating all the key prospective intervals in the block. The wells will fulfil the minimum work programme on the block and constitute the work that was approved by the regulator CNH in the Exploration Plan.
Cairn will also be active in its non-operated blocks, in Block 10 the Saasken-1 well and in Block 7 the Ehecatl-1 well will be drilled by the Operator Eni. These wells will also have multiple objectives and will help to determine the follow up drilling activity scheduled for 2020 in these blocks.
On Block 15 in the Tampico Misantla Basin Cairn continues to evaluate the 3D seismic data to determine the future exploration strategy for the area.
* Farm-down and farm-in agreements between Cairn and ENI to swap a 15% interest in Block 9 for a 15% interest in Block 10 have been approved by CNH, subject to final completion of the signature process of the revised Production Sharing Contracts to give effect to the change in the JV working interest.
